Estimated bills can lead to over-charging

The NSW and Victorian Energy Ombudmans have both noted an increase in complaints in relation to utility bills issuing estimated bills as reported in the Herald Sun.

The number of estimated bills issued by electricity retailers is increasing compared to last year as properties become more secure and access to meters is restricted.

If an electricity retailer cannot get access to read a meter, a guess is made as to what electricty or gas has been consumed and a bill is issued on this basis.

This can lead to over-charging or under-charging which can make cashflow difficult to manage particularly in tough economic times.

Alison Walter of ShopAround.com.au said that "Consumers should check their electricity and gas bill to ensure they are being charged correctly. If you are unsure about whether you are getting the cheapest electricity you should contact your supplier to ensure you meter has been read. If you have a billing issue that you cannot resolve with your supplier then contact the Ombudsman in your state for asssitance. And remember - if your electricity retailer still isn't up to scratch take 5 minutes to compare Victorian electricity and gas companies and maybe you can save by making the choice to go and switch to a new electricity or gas supplier."
