Environmentally friendly green electricity can cost less

The unquestionable success of Earth Hour 2009 demonstrates that most people are aware of the great challenges facing the planet. Hundreds of millions of people around the world switched off lights on Saturday night to express their concern about climate change.

“Earth Hour 2009 was an incredible success,” said WWF International Director General James Leape. In 2009 world leaders will be considering how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will decide whether to commit to binding reductions.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that in central Sydney power use dropped by about 9 per cent, according to Energy Australia. This was greater than the 2008 event but less than the first Earth Hour, staged in 2007, when a 10 per drop in electricity was recorded.

While the success of Earth Hour is an encouraging sign for climate change campaigners, Alison Walter of price comparison service ShopAround.com.au said most household weren’t prepared to pay extra for green energy. Although there are many Australian energy plans which are friendlier to the environment, households are reluctant to switch if it’s going to cost more.

Alison Walter added, “It pays to shop around for your electricity and gas as in some situations an environmentally friendly green plan can actually be cheaper than your current plan.”
