Victorians see the light

Record numbers of Victorian households are taking advantage of the energy electricity and gas savings made available through increased competition in the retail energy markets. Victoria now has one of the highest switching rates in the world, with 26% of electricity customers and 23% of gas customers taking the time to research electricity companies and gas prices and switch to new energy deals during the 2006-2007 year.

The Essential Services Commission ("ESC") has calculated that with 13 retailers in the market all offering a variety of energy discounts off the standard rate a household with average energy consumption can save between $79 and $150 per year. There are also some great Green energy and renewable energy deals out there if consumers are looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

David Power, Director of ShopAround.com.au said that: “The Victorian government has been committed to educating consumers about their energy choices and have actively promoted competition in the market. In a time when living costs are rising the savings to be found by shopping around and doing an energy comparison to find which electricity companies in Victoria offer cheap energy, cheap electricity or cheap gas prices can really help households that are struggling to make ends meet.”

ShopAround.com.au’s aim is to make it easier for Victorian consumers to do an energy comparison and find a deal that’s right for them by providing a simple online energy comparison and switching service that is free to consumers. David Power said: “Victorian energy suppliers and electricity companies participating in the ShopAround.com.au website are showing their commitment to true transparency and competition in the market by being part of a service that allows consumers to easily shop for cheap energy, electricity and gas. We look forward to welcoming more Victorian electricity and gas companies to the service soon.”
