No better time to compare Victorian electricity suppliers
The Age has reported that Victorian electricity and gas prices are set to rise by about 9 per cent, an increase of $109 per year on the typical energy bill.
The rises come as the Victorian government removes the final price protection cap from the electricity and gas pricing system.
Victorian electricity companies and gas suppliers will no longer be restricted in what they charge consumers. Instead, the government is relying on Victorian electricity suppliers and Victorian gas companies to publish their prices and thereby improve competition.
Alison Walter of ShopAround.com.au said that "Consumers must now compare electricity prices and compare gas prices themselves. They cannot rely on the government watchdog to ensure they are getting the cheapest electricity price in Victoria. If they want cheaper electricity or cheaper gas, they must do the groundwork themselves."
It is expected that with the exception of Energy Australia the large majority of Victorian energy retailers will increase their prices.
The Age reported that TruEnergy will increase their prices by 5.3%, AGL by a margin of 9.8% and Origin Energy by a margin of 9.2%. The Courier has reported that Momentum Energy will increase their prices by the largest margin of 33.2%.
